One of our clients is a large insurance company. After creating their Web site we suggested doing their Intranet. Insurance companies rely on a lot of forms and many of them have current (and expired) versions. Their people were spending a lot of unnecessary time looking around for forms.
They decided to install an Intranet so their employees would always have access to the latest version of all their company forms. After installing the Intranet they found that it could be used for so much more. Here is an example of the information inside their intranet.
Security Level 3 Employees
Mission statement, company standards, company newsletter, suggestion box, pictures from the latest party, vendor web pages and important links, current company directory, and company bulletin board.
Security Level 4 Employees
Updating documents on the Web site, current applications and forms, add news item to web site, edit company directory, add employment opportunities to the site.
Security Level 5 Employees
User administration and Upload Company Directory
The Company Intranet provides useful information for every employee in the organization. Each employee has the HOME button on their browser set to the company main menu. All the time previously spend looking for things (documents, forms, names, phone and email) is at their fingertips at all time. Accounting estimates Site Administration paid for itself after the first week in operation.
